National Deficit

Can I just say I'm tired of tax plans that come out of Washington which do not cover known expenses over their duration? I think there is room for debt both on a personal and national level (think mortgages and war bonds, respectively). I am convinced that the answer is not necessarily to raise taxes, because that cuts into purchasing power. I do believe that redirected government spending would help. If the government wishes to spend so much more than it makes, then it should spend it on things that have a high ROI. For example, consider if some of the funding for national parks and museums was spent on education so that it benefits the whole population instead of just senior citizens with their Golden Eagle National Park passes and 2nd graders who can afford to go on a field trip to the museum. A simplistic example, for sure. Or perhaps the government could trickle down some frugal practices like turning off lights in government building when they are not in use, etc. Since I am not a master of macroeconomics, I do not claim to have solutions to this problem, but I am seriously grumpy over such a ridiculously unbalanced budget. Per Wikipedia, the national dept was 65% of our GDP in 2007. Oh my goodness! Spend less than you make! Or make more than you spend!

P.S. Our tax system is ridiculously overcomplicated...
